Lent Appeal launched

The Lent Appeal has now officially launched! Children from St Gabriel’s School, Pimlico, joined the Bishop of London to mark the beginning of Living Water: this year’s appeal which aims to support the Millennium Development Goal of halving the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015.

News of the launch is available at www.london.anglican.org/NewsShow_11571 and information about the Appeal itself can be found at www.london.anglican.org/LentAppeal.

ALMA fundraising events

If you are arranging a special event to raise funds for ALMA, whether for the Lent Appeal or beyond, please let us know by emailing almacomms (Email: almacomms [at] london.anglican.org).

For example, St Mary Brookfield has arranged a concert by the London Medical Orchestra to raise money for a health post in the Diocese of Niassa. Visit www.london.anglican.org/EventShow_11591 for full information.

Free, practical help for those in fuel poverty

Keeping warm in winter is a major issue for many people and Britain’s energy companies have now earmarked £3.8 billion for measures to help the most vulnerable.

The independent Home Heat Helpline – 0800 33 66 99 – can deliver for these vulnerable groups:

  • Advice on social tariffs – typically a 20 per cent saving
  • Grants for free home insulation regardless of who owns the property and no means testing for the over 70s. Absolute right for them to receive free cavity wall and loft insulation or free top-ups to modern standards. Same help to all households in receipt of attendance allowance, disability living allowance or employment and support allowance (incapacity benefit) single parent allowance or households with young children with an annual income of less than £14,600.
  • Access to the Priority Service Register, with free annual gas appliance safety checks, passwords for official gas and electricity-related callers. Third party, Braille, large print and talking billing
  • Flexible payment options for customers in fuel debt
  • A disconnection safety net, ensuring no vulnerable customer will be knowingly disconnected

The Home Heat Helpline also recognises that those most in need of help are often those least able to access it so the helpline now accepts third party applications including calls from clergy on behalf of parishioners, healthcare professionals on behalf of patients, volunteers on behalf of those they assist, even friends, relatives and neighbours. Lines are open 9am-8pm Mon-Fri and 10am-2pm on Saturdays. Calls are taken by trained expert advisers, not call centre operatives, and you can even arrange a call back or get more information at www.homeheathelpline.org.uk.

The Home Heat Helpline is a free service to help the over 70s, the disabled, the long-term sick, and families on low incomes with young children, who are worried about paying their energy bills and keeping warm.

Calls are answered by friendly, expert advisers who are trained to give quick and clear information on energy efficiency, grants for free home insulation, free annual gas appliance safety checks, free replacement boilers, and even reduced prices for gas and electricity.

You can call yourself, or ring on behalf of a friend, relative, patient or client or parishioner.

The Home Heat Helpline is open 9am-8pm Monday to Friday and 10am-2pm on Saturdays – and it won’t cost you a penny to ring. For more information visit www.homeheathelpline.org.uk.

Lent Carbon Fast

A message from Brian Cuthbertson, Head of Environmental Challenge:

Lent 2009 is now upon us!  Ash Wednesday is on Wednesday 25 February.

The Bishop and the Diocese are warmly supporting the Lent Carbon Fast, organised by Tearfund again this year.

Here are four key themes for every church and congregation member to reflect on:-

  • ‘ “Love does no harm to its neighbour” (Romans 13:10) – climate change can mean our neighbours go hungry because of drought … There are many things we can do … to change the way our lives impact poor communities.’
  • We encourage all church members to observe Lent and Holy Week (from 25 February to 11 April) with specific actions which reduce our contribution to climate change.
  • Reducing our emissions and changing the way we live are not just things we do in Lent – they need to be forever! Let’s make changes which have the most benefit and which we can sustain well after Easter!

And here are three food-related highlights, based on Tearfund’s menu:

  • Let’s give up bottled water – even when we’re on the move, we can fill a bottle from the tap.
  • De-frosting the fridge and freezer (unless they’re auto-defrost) improves their efficiency, reduces emissions – and is good for our own health.
  • Can we buy unwrapped food, e.g. fruit and veg, and save on packaging and landfill use?

Full details of the Carbon Fast can be found on Tearfund’s website here and here.

Prayers in a crisis

The Bishop of London circulated recently his reflections on the Implications of the Financial Crisis and the Recession.

The London Church Leaders received a request for a day of prayer concerning the recession and decided to commend in common prayers which could be used ecumenically across London on Ash Wednesday, or as churches wished. These are attached.

We are also asked by our Archbishops to remember the people of Zimbabwe on this day of prayer and fasting.

The Implications of the Financial Crisis and the Recession

This is the text of a speech the Bishop of London gave today at General Synod. General information about General Synod can be found here. Synod agendas and papers, and live audio, can be accessed here.

“A friend left the following stark message on a mobile phone belonging to one of my children. “Called to the Plaza. I am out – told to report to reception. Don’t use this e mail account again.” The person concerned is not UK born and while she was not one of the high earners in the City, work provided her with a social world as well. With some hundreds of others she was summoned to HQ. The people who faced her across the table were not from the HR department but they were lawyers and security. She was asked if she had left anything on her desk. She mentioned her hand bag. She was told to go directly to Reception where her bag would be brought to her by security. This of course reflects the relative ease with which great damage can be done in today’s wired up world.
