General Secretary & Chief Executive of the Diocese

A message from the Bishop of London:

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Andy Brookes as General Secretary & Chief Executive of the Diocese in succession to Keith Robinson.

Andy Brookes, over a 25-year career, has worked for a number of significant organisations including the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), the Bank of England and most recently Aon. For the past five years he has been leading the modernising of the London insurance market as Head of Market Reform at Lloyd’s of London. In his work for the Bank of England, Andy was a major contributor to the design, build and promotion of the CREST settlement system. He is an economist by background, having studied at University College London and gained a Masters degree through Queen Mary College.

Andy is married with four children. He is currently Church Warden of St James Muswell Hill. For a decade he was part of Emmanuel Church in Holloway, where he retains strong links. He appreciates the diverse traditions represented by our churches and the breadth and depth this has given to our mission and ministry in London.

Andy has been appointed as a result of a rigorous selection process including advertisement in the national press and other journals, the engagement of a professional recruitment consultant, a panel interview and various one-to-one interviews. There was a high level of interest, and over 100 very able candidates.

I know that Andy is looking forward to taking up the post on 1 December 2009 and commend him to your prayers as he makes this major transition in his career. I hope that you will all give him a warm welcome.

With thanks for our partnership in the Gospel.

The Rt Revd and Rt Hon Richard Chartres KCVO DD FSA

Staff changes June 2009

HR administrator

Catherine Ward has joined the staff of the LDF as HR Administrator. Catherine will report to Paula Bailey. This role is a new one which derives out of necessity to meet the demands of a raft of new legislation which affects the work in the Diocese.

Catherine will support the work of the Bishop’s Advisers on Child Protection and administer the Child Protection Training events. Additionally Catherine will support the work of those who operate our procedures in connection with the Criminal Records Bureau and she will administer training events for PCCs in this regard. Other legislation which will relate to Catherine’s work is that set up to prevent illegal working by migrants. This applies both to the clergy and LDF staff and Catherine will assist in ensuring compliance with that legislation, in particular through liaison with bishops’ offices.

The Clergy Terms of Service legislation, which has been working its way through Parliament, has now received Royal Assent and will become live in 2010. This will have the effect, among other things, of giving the Diocese of London’s 550 clergy employment rights. Some implementation preparation has already started but now this needs to advance. Work consequent upon this new legislation will be a significant part of Catherine’s job.

Keith Robinson, General Secretary

A message from the Bishop of London

Keith Robinson has decided to retire from his role as General Secretary of the Diocese. His final day in post will be September 30th.

Keith’s contribution to the Church in London over the past decade has been huge. Efficiency at Causton Street has been improved and costs have been controlled but all in the service of the development of a flourishing and convincing church as we confront the missionary challenge of London. I have greatly enjoyed working with Keith and I am glad that he is looking for other ways of serving the church in the Diocese and that he has no intention of ceasing to be an active partner in the gospel.

Recruitment consultants have already been appointed to identify a successor in the hope that he/she will be in place at about the time Keith leaves. The post will be advertised shortly after Easter and I am consulting with colleagues about the interviewing process.

I will write further about how I propose to mark Keith’s contribution to the Diocese.
