Stories Worth Telling

When you visit the Partners of organisations like Christian Aid, you hear stories that surprise you, and give you fresh insight into what the Spirit of God is doing in the world today. When you return home, wondering how to share those stories, and are invited to churches which use the Lectionary, you often find that they are perfect illustrations of the Gospel readings for the day.

That repeated experience led a group to set down the stories, link them to Gospel readings from the Lectionary, and present them especially for the use of preachers and others who lead worship regularly. The stories from overseas have been supplemented by others from nearer home, with reflections, songs and prayers. We hope this will be a good resource for churches who want to know where the Reign of God’s Love is at work today.

“Stories Worth Telling” is available from 15, High Street, Wymington, near Rushden, NN10 9LS, price £10 plus £2 p&p. Please make out cheques to T J Woods (the group Treasurer), or you can pay through Paypal at www.themeetingplacewymington.co.uk/swt.

St Paul’s Cathedral Easter Eve confirmation service

Clergy are welcome to present candidates either for confirmation only, or confirmation and baptism. Those wishing to present candidates are asked to contact Mrs Susan Charles, the Liturgical Administrator, at the Chapter House or susanc (Email: susanc [at] stpaulscathedral.org.uk) by Monday 25 February please – the earlier the better.

The service is at 6pm this year – an hour earlier than in previous years.

Please send Mrs Charles the following information for each candidate you wish to present:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Date and place of baptism (or name and occupation of parents for candidates for infant baptism)
  • Name of presenting clergy
  • Parish

In order that the Bishop (The Bishop of London) can know something of the people he is confirming, and be able to pray for them more specifically before the service, please also ask your candidates to handwrite a short biography. Please then send the biographies to Susan Charles who will collate them and pass them to the Bishop.

If any candidates or their supporters require the services of a BSL interpreter, please inform Mrs Charles by 25 February at the latest.

Due to the administrative requirements associated with this service, only those candidates who have been notified to the Cathedral by Monday 25 February, and whose information is complete by that date can be included in the service.

The Rehearsal will take place at 4.30pm on Saturday 30 March. Please come with your candidates, meeting under the Dome for a walk through. The rehearsal will start promptly and will last around 40 minutes. Please allow plenty of time to arrive, get to the right part of the cathedral and be ready to start at 4.30. It is very unfair on young people if they miss part of the rehearsal, and spend the service worrying about where to be and what to do. After the rehearsal refreshments will be provided in the Crypt where the candidates will also meet the Bishop.

Please bring along your Confirmation Register – any Baptisms will be recorded in the St Paul’s Baptism Register.

Presenting Clergy robe in the Dean’s Aisle (surplice and white stole).

Fair and Square: free school meals for all children in poverty

More than half of all school-age children living in poverty currently don’t get free school meals. These 1.2 million children may not be eating a single nutritious meal all day.

The Children’s Society is campaigning for all children in poverty to receive a free school meal. We’re approaching the deadline for petition signatures. Please circulate the attached, or ask people to go to www.childrenssociety.org.uk/fairandsquare by 3 February to join the call for all children to get the food they need to grow and thrive.

This year’s Lent Appeal: Street Child World Cup

The Street Child World Cup, a unique charity using football to campaign for street children is the focus for this year’s Diocese of London Lent Appeal.

In April of last year Bishop Richard hosted members of the 2010 Brazilian Street Child World Cup team when they came to London to promote the Street Child World Cup in Rio 2014. On meeting the team he said:

“Football can bring the world together and transform lives. It was thrilling to meet members of the Brazilian team from the 2010 Street Child World Cup. I heard about grim experiences in early life and the power of support and friendship to open up new hope and aspirations.”

Founded in the belief that street children are made in God’s own image and that all children should have a future free from fear, neglect and abuse, the Street Child World Cup was set up by Amos Trust, a Christian charity based in one of the churches in the Diocese. Through football, art and campaigning the Street Child World Cup aims to challenge the negative perceptions and treatment of street children around the world.

More than a Game is a two minute promotional video about the Street Child World Cup.

In 2014 sixteen teams of street children from countries as varied as Egypt, South Africa, Brazil, Philippines, Ukraine, India and Mozambique, will come together in Rio to compete in a football tournament and take part in a unique street child conference.

Lorelyn, from the Phillippines team, said:

“This tournament has helped me to believe in the world again and to know that I am somebody.”

Lent appeal leaflets, posters and gift aid envelopes are available to order here. Every parish should have received publicity samples and instructions for treasurers by post.

Download the special Churches Fundraising Pack, which is full of ideas and resources to help everyone in the Diocese get involved, whether it is by hosting a church football tournament, putting on a Brazil themed coffee morning, or by giving something up for Lent for street children.

Whilst the Worship Resource Pack contains a range of readings, prayers, all age and sermon ideas to help churches talk about street children and the Street Child World Cup during Lent.

This Lent let’s make a difference for Street Children all around the world.

Keeping the Promise: Scouting & GirlGuiding Promise consultations

Both Girlguiding UK and UK Scouting are currently conducting consultations into their new members “Promise”. They are independent of each other and the two consultations are intrinsically different but both potentially noteworthy for the Church.

UK Scouting is consulting about developing a membership Promise for atheists, which closes on Thursday 31st January 2013.

Girlguiding UK is consulting about the Promise currently taken by all its members, to enquire whether to drop references to God and the Queen in the oath. It closes on Sunday 3 March 2013.

Both consultations are open to non-members as well as members and can be completed online and via post.

“Keeping the Promise” asks those with links to uniformed organisations in the Church and other interested parties to complete the consultations with a view to the retention of the reference to God and the Queen.

Church Engagement

While there is no formal link between the Church and uniformed organisations, many parishes across the country have close links to their local groups. Uniformed organisations routinely meet on church premises, parade services are a part of the regular worshipping life of many parishes, volunteers for groups often come from parish churches whilst for churches themselves their work with the uniformed organisations forms an integral part of the engagement with young people. It is also worth noting that for Guiding, many units across the country are ‘sponsored’ by their local church. Open sponsorship indicates a close link between the church and the unit but allows girls of any faith or no faith to join.

Ride+Stride 2013

RIDE+STRIDE is a national open churches event, but it’s one with a twist – as well as getting out and about you can raise money to help churches in your area.

The idea is to have as many as possible open in each diocese and to find as many people as possible to get sponsored for visiting them. The sponsorship money you raise is then shared 50/50 between a local grant-giver that assists historic churches and the individual church of your choice.

For more information on what this actually entails for visitors and for participating parishes, see the page on the diocesan website. Parishes wishing to participate should register an interest by 13 February 2013.

It Took Another Riot

Matthew Girt, Head of Strategic Development, writes:

Following the riots in Tottenham last summer a small independent group, commissioned by the Mayor and chaired by Sir Stuart Lipton, was asked to look at the reasons for the riots in Tottenham and make recommendations to turn the situation around. The Diocese and its local clergy played a key role in this work, and the report ‘It took another riot’ is the result.

The report was launched on the 11th December at both City Hall and Tottenham by Boris Johnson, Lord Heseltine, Sir Stuart Lipton and David Lammy MP. As you will see it is hard hitting in its recommendations and observations, yet has cross party, local and national support, and is accepted by the Mayor in its entirety.

Michael Heseltine who supported our work through this last year was clear in his statements about the importance of the findings and recommendations and drew parallels with the work in the 1980’s at Toxteth.

It is clear that the work of the Church of England is recognised in this report, and Sir Stuart Lipton publicly referred to it on a number of occasions in his address. The work on the report has opened doors and increased understanding of the work of the Church on a wide scale, but more importantly it smooths the way for clergy and lay to take forward their mission and ministry with the society in which they live and work in Tottenham. It also acts as ‘approved proof’ of the huge relevance of the Church of England in London.

I would particularly like to note my thanks to the local clergy, whose work features in the report, for their work and contributions and contacts throughout this years work.

Diocesan Property Review

We have recently concluded a major review of the London Diocesan Fund’s (LDF’s) property function, led by independent consultants and overseen by external experts on the Property Advisory Group. As lots of you will know, it included a far-reaching exercise to gather the views of clergy, staff, and others – huge thanks to all of you who shared your views and insights with us. The review is a thorough and encouraging piece of work, both in terms of what has been achieved so far and the potential for further improvements. It focused on three areas: clergy housing, support for the management and development of parish property, and investment income.
