About Yvonne Morris

Yvonne Morris is Children's Adviser for the Diocese of Oxford, helping, supporting, training and advising churches and their workers on their ministry with children. Yvonne still gets to practise ministry locally at St Matthew's and Luke's Churches in Oxford, where she was Youth and Children's Minister for ten and a half years before taking up her diocesan role and, further afield, working with tweens on summer camps for West Runton Holidays.

Nurturing children’s faith through play

On a recent Sunday morning anyone peeping through the window would’ve seen a group of small boys enjoying playing with bricks and Lego. Boys enjoying construction is not a new phenomenon. In this particular instance we were exploring the story of Nehemiah praying and then going to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem with my church’s 5-8s groups.

In our exploration we built with bricks and Lego (and chairs and tables) and we wondered if Doctor Who’s sonic screwdriver would be more helpful than a sword whilst simultaneously wondering how we know when God answers our prayers, if he does and why Nehemiah had to wait four months and what’s like waiting and what are similarities and differences between Doctor Who and God. Incidentally, there was also quite a bit of quiet singing along to the worship songs on the iPod.

Are we asking the right questions?

Have you ever paid much attention to the questions you ask and others ask of you?

What sort of questions do you enjoy responding to? What sort of questions do you hate?  Do you, like me, hate it when the telephonist at call centre says, ‘Can you spare a couple of minutes to complete a short questionnaire?’ Since I never do, who is it who says ‘yes’ to those surveys?

How many questions do you ask a day? How many do you get asked?  What’s the best question you’ve been asked this week?  Are they life-giving questions or are they energy and esteem sapping? Why do adults often fear the questions that children ask, especially questions about faith?

Which questions help us explore the meaning of life? What type of questions enable us to grow in our faith? Who has the key to unlock to mystery of ‘who am I?’ ‘What am I doing here?’ and ‘Where am I going?’ Are there monsters under the bed? If there are, who will protect me in the dark? How do I know if I’m strong enough to cope? What does it mean to be weak? [Read more...]
