Getting involved during the 2012 Games: city centre churches

The Olympic and Paralympic Games present city centre churches with an opportunity both to reach our international visitors, but also to build community presence, and enjoy the Games together.

Here are some details of how churches can be involved, in serving at stations and transport hubs, offering hospitality, and staying open during the 2012 Games.

Stations and transport hubs:

With an extra 500,000 visitors a day in central London, it’s important that we coordinate with other groups – uniformed services, other faith groups and volunteers – so that everything runs smoothly. I’m working to find out what’s going on at the major stations, and how we can use our church members and buildings to serve visitors. For example, plans are beginning to develop at Kings Cross, Euston and St Pancras, which involve churches, Games Pastors, chaplaincy teams and other faith groups and denominations each providing a part of the overall welcome. Ordinands in the Two Cities Area

I am glad to say that there are still many men and women offering themselves for the ordained ministry in the Two Cities. At the same time, Jeremy Crossley, who currently leads the team of Directors of Ordinands, will soon, I hope, be taking on some additional responsibilities in the City – I will write to you later in the month about this. He continues to look after our POT curates, assisted by Stephen Heard.

I am happy to tell you that the Revd Nicholas Papadopulos has agreed to become Director of Ordinands for the Archdeaconry of Charing Cross, leading the team already in place there, but easing Jeremy’s workload so that I can use his considerable gifts in other areas. [Read more...]

New Area Dean of Westminster (Paddington)

It is a pleasure to tell you that after consultation with the Deanery I have invited The Revd Jeremy Allcock, Vicar of St Stephen’s, Westbourne Park, to become Area Dean of Westminster (Paddington) and he has gladly accepted my invitation. Jeremy served as Assistant Area Dean of Newham in the Diocese of Chelmsford before he came to St Stephen’s in 2005 so he is not completely new to the role. I know there is a great deal of support for Jeremy and I am confident that he will strengthen the mission and ministry of the Paddington parishes in all their rich diversity.

We owe a great debt of gratitude to The Revd Alastair Thom who has served us all so well over the past five years. I had hoped that he might stay on a little longer, but I well understand that with so many other obligations he felt that he should pass on the responsibilities once he had fulfilled his term of office.

Do pray for Jeremy, Clare and the family as he takes on this new role over the coming weeks and for the people of St Stephen’s. I hope to commission him publicly at the beginning of our Two Cities Area Council on Wednesday 29th June.

With thanks for our partnership in the Gospel
